To achieve a beautiful, healthy smile, you have to give 100% to following your doctor's instructions, caring for your teeth and maintaining your appliances. Just remember, it's worth it...because the more you comply, the faster and better the results.
Brushing and Flossing
Keeping your teeth clean takes extra time and work when wearing braces. But it's absolutely necessary in order to avoid a whole range of problems, including plaque build-up that can lead to gum disease, white spots or decalcification that can cause permanent scarring of the enamel, and of course, tooth decay and bad breath brought on by insufficient cleaning. Many orthodontists recommend specialized brush tips for getting under wires and in between brackets, as well as floss-threaders to help make it easier to floss and dislodge food. Add a rinse of your favorite over-the-counter mouthwash to help minimize harmful bacteria and keep your breath fresh.
Foods To Avoid, and More
What's off the menu while you're in braces? Sticky, hard, crunchy and extra-chewy foods that can damage brackets, wires and bands (and prolong treatment). Just say no to chips, bubble gum, nuts, ice, corn-on-the cob, caramels, gummi candies, apples, bagels—and anything high in sugar. And don't forget to keep pencils, pens and fingernails out of your mouth, too.
APPLIANCE CARE
Always wear the appliances prescribed---successful orthodontic treatment depends on it. "Forgetting" or damaging your appliances can stretch-out your treatment time and delay results. If you break an appliance, contact us immediately at: CONTACT INFO.
THE IMPORTANCE OF RETAINERS
Often, after braces are removed, a retainer will be prescribed. The retainer locks-in the new positioning of the teeth and keeps them from shifting as your mouth, gums and jaw adjust to your beautiful new smile. Therapy generally lasts from 15-24 months.
